Every home needs mirrors. We all know they reflect light, brighten the room, make spaces appear larger, and give guests a way to quickly check their lipstick.

I use lots of mirrors, but this is one of my favorites. I found it about 20 years ago, and used it over and over in spaces where I needed a big statement. This mirror could be used in almost any of my current projects. It just is too perfect, and lifts all the elements around it up a notch.

It originally cost about $300, and considering that it is a piece that still looks good two decades later, that is money well spent.

One of the first rooms I used it in was this French Country room with lots of black, silver, gold, green, and of course, blue and white. ( You really can’t go wrong with silk drapery. These were found in a Charleston harbor view penthouse with a wall of windows. I split the drapery into several sections to make it work for this home.) I placed the LaBarge side table as a tea table, to make skirting around it to the back veranda easier. Maitland-Smith now owns LaBarge, and they still have great pieces like this in their collections. The walls are BM 2028-50 Wales Green, which give a cool cast to hot Charleston afternoons.

A relocation and this client needed to update their space, but they landed in a temporary Mt. Pleasant townhouse while they waited on their new home. I edited their furnishings fast, keeping the mirror and an English sideboard to max out storage space in the reduced square footage. The black and white zebra chair stayed for drama. Even a temporary home can be stunning. The builder grade vanilla walls disappear with all that bling going on.

Another example of this great Art Deco inspired bevelled mirror is in this beautiful two story foyer. A Global Views star chandelier graces the BM HC-172 Revere Pewter walls. Revere Pewter has a greige cast to it, but it turns cooler and towards gray when paired with orange red oak floors. This home has had new flooring installed since this photo. However, I didn’t change the walls or the mirror. This mirror is always a yes.
