This story starts with a man on a mission. One of the most important execs in aviation called me late one evening and said, “You have to come over and pick paint colors for my house.” This is a guy who spends his spare time hunting, fishing, and reading military history tomes, so I was surprised when he greeted me with a paint deck at his front door. “I am tired of brown!” he declared.

I agreed. His house felt like the inside of a mushroom. His wife was calmer and more methodical. “I like blue,” she announced. “And fuchsia.” Wow! Not what I expected to hear from a client who was currently surrounded by army green and tan. Thibaut Ischia in Turquoise from the Tropics collection was a great place to start…

What started as selecting a few paint colors for a self-professed DIYer ended up as a whole house remodel, and the results are fantastic! This fun couple are now front and center in their own space, surrounded by furnishings and colors that express their passions and vitality. I even added a few of my favorite military history books.

Before the remodel, their bedroom was lined with 12 (yes, 12!!!) oddly matched pieces of furniture. Mostly, they were inherited from family. So, the first step was to remove unnecessary pieces from the room. I replaced the small nightstands with large 3 drawer chests, which added the storage they need while matching the scale of the king poster bed. New lamps add a pop of color.

I completely changed the color scheme, introducing the cool aquas she loves, and introducing the fuchsia she wanted. Thibaut’s Medallion Paisley in Pink and Aqua was the perfect choice to tie the space together.

They are huge SEWE fans, and sit on the board for the SC Aquarium, so I added art that reflects their love of nature and animals.

A bright wool rug with a diamond pattern keeps the space crisp. Always use a rug that is room sized. A smaller rug would have shrunk this spacious room.

We also added custom shades and draperies. The existing plantation shutters were nice, but they didn’t allow enough light into the room, and they totally blocked the view. Top down, bottom up natural woven shades allow clients to see out all day, while still maintaining privacy. The light woven grass reflects the history of the lowcountry sweetgrass artists we all love.

The four poster bed and Jamaican dresser work well with the new design. Updated bed linens in a crisp Italian linen and cotton keep the space cozy, but cool.

Another look back…. ick!
